Upcycle a Thrifted Sweater into a Cozy Fall Statement Piece

1 minute read

There’s something so satisfying about giving new life to a thrift store find, especially when all it takes is a few creative touches! Today, we took a simple burnt orange cardigan we found at Goodwill and turned it into a one-of-a-kind, fall-ready piece of fashion magic.

The secret? Buttons and a bit of imagination.

Step 1: Find Your Base

Start with a cardigan or sweater that has great color or texture, even if the buttons or small details feel a little dated. The one we found was a warm burnt orange, perfect for autumn, but the plain white buttons felt a little too basic.

Step 2: Choose Your Buttons

Here’s where the fun begins! We swapped out those plain buttons for some of our favorite Fall Produce Themed buttons from the shop.  Think carrots, turnips, etc. Instantly, the cardigan went from simple to storybook.

Step 3: Add Simple Embroidery (Optional)

If you’re feeling crafty, add a few hand-stitched accents around the cuffs or neckline. Simple flowers, vines, or tiny mushrooms can bring a cottagecore charm to your look. No need to be a pro as, even imperfect stitches add handmade charm.

Step 4: Style It Up

Pair your upcycled cardigan with a flowy dress, jeans, or a plaid skirt for an effortlessly cozy, cottagecore-inspired outfit. It’s sustainable, personal, and oh-so-unique.
